Is Minecraft 2 on the Horizon? Notch Teases a Possible Sequel
Markus “Notch” Persson, the creator of Minecraft, has sparked excitement among fans by hinting at the possibility of a spiritual successor to his iconic game, often speculated to be “Minecraft 2.” However, while his comments have generated a lot of buzz, it’s still uncertain whether a true sequel will ever come to life.

In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Notch expressed his interest in developing a new game that would feature similar gameplay mechanics to Minecraft. He clarified that creating an actual Minecraft 2, without Microsoft’s involvement, would be legally impossible, given that the company owns Mojang, the studio behind the game.

Nevertheless, Notch proposed a new project that could be a natural progression for fans of the original, although it wouldn’t directly infringe on Minecraft’s intellectual property.

Notch also mentioned that he would be willing to collaborate with Microsoft on this new project, offering the company a larger share of the profits as a goodwill gesture. While the new game would be an original creation, it seems like Notch is open to working alongside Microsoft if they were interested in being a part of it.

Although Notch’s comments have led to considerable online speculation, the likelihood of a “Minecraft 2” happening remains uncertain. Microsoft and Mojang have focused on continuously updating Minecraft, rather than pursuing a full-fledged sequel. In fact, Notch’s new game could be the closest fans will get to a true follow-up, especially given his relatively low-profile in game development since selling Mojang in 2014.

If the project goes ahead, it would represent Notch’s return to the genre he helped shape, providing fans with something akin to a sequel while still remaining within the bounds of his original creative vision.

The concept of a new game with Minecraft-like mechanics could be a thrilling prospect, but whether or not it will materialize remains to be seen.
