DomainJava.com – Accrington vs Grimsby Town prediction in the EFL League Two match, Accrington Stanley who are threatened with relegation will host Grimsby Town who are chasing promotion at the Wham Stadium on New Year’s Day in League Two.

The hosts have not won in the league since the start of November, while the visitors will be full of confidence and looking to make it three wins in a row on Wednesday.

John Doolan’s Accrington are currently 22nd in League Two, having picked up 19 points from their 22 games so far.

Just one point ahead of Carlisle United in the relegation zone, Stanley have not won a league game since November 9, when they beat Chesterfield 3-0 at home.

In last Wednesday’s match, Doolan’s side were hammered 5-2 by Grimsby, a match in which Accrington conceded four goals in the first half and only managed a consolation goal to show for all their attacking efforts.

Since that game, this week’s hosts have lost four of their last five games, drawing once in that span against Fleetwood Town, although it’s fair to say that Stanley were in good form before their clash with the Mariners, as they were unbeaten in seven games previously in all competitions.

Either way, the Doolan side are at serious risk of relegation this season unless results improve, and last time out they were beaten 2-1 at home by fellow strugglers Carlisle.

This week, Accrington will be up against a team off to a poor start to their current run of form, and will be hoping that at the start of the new year they can make a fresh start and stay clear of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, David Artell’s Grimsby are in the race for promotion from League Two with 37 points from their 23 games to date.

Goal difference aside, the Mariners have the second most points in the division, and although Walsall are already 12 points clear at the top of the table, another automatic promotion spot is clearly a realistic target for Artell’s side this season.

Most recently, Grimsby beat their rivals Port Vale 3-0 at home, and with that win, they have recorded four wins from their last six games, starting since beating Accrington.

However, in contrast to their hosts on Wednesday, the Mariners were in poor form before their game in early December and had even won just one of their previous seven matches.

On Wednesday, the visitors will be looking for three points to move them into second place in the table ahead of Port Vale, Doncaster Rovers, Notts County and AFC Wimbledon, who all have 37 points.

Accrington Doolan bosses will still be without Jake Batty and Jay Rich-Baghuelou this week, although midfielder Dan Martin, who has not featured in the matchday squad since October, returns against Carlisle as a substitute.

While he improves his fitness, Nelson Khumbeni and Liam Coyle are expected to start in midfield, along with Connor O’Brien, who missed the last game through suspension.

Elsewhere, striker Dara Costelloe, who picked up an injury against Salford City on December 21, will again be replaced by Shaun Whalley in the XI.

As for Grimsby, right-back Lewis Cass was withdrawn due to injury against Port Vale, and Tyrell Warren is likely to start alongside Harvey Rodgers, Cameron McJannett and Denver Hume in the back line.

Likewise, Evan Khouri may join Kieran Green in midfield after Jordan Davies suffered an injury last time out.
